Cutting those carbs just might be what you need.
What is a low carb diet?
A low carb diet ideally limits the intake of carbohydrates in your diet, such as the ones found in grains, starchy vegetables and fruit. The low carb diet mainly comprises foods rich in protein and fat. But there is no one single, one-size-fits-all diet. There are many kinds of low carb diets that exist and each has its own restrictions on the types and amounts of carbohydrates you can consume.
The following are the foods that you should eat on a low carb diet:
Meat: You can consume any type of meat such as beef, pork, lamb, poultry etc. Don’t avoid the fat on the meat as well as the skin on the chicken. Try going for organic or grass-fed meats as far as possible.
Fish and seafood: Again, you can consume all kinds of fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines or herring.
Eggs: Boiled, fried, scrambled, omeletes – consume all the possible kinds of eggs if you are on a low carb diet, preferably organic.
Natural, high-fat sauces: Sure your food tastes better when you add cream and butter. But other good options are coconut oil or olive oil. You could also try switching to Béarnaise or Hollandaise sauce while on a low carb diet.
Vegetables (the ones that grow above the ground): Cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage and Brussels sprouts, kale, collards, bok choy, spinach, asparagus, zucchini, eggplant, olives, spinach, mushrooms, cucumber, lettuce, avocado, onions, peppers, tomatoes – to name a few.
Dairy products: Ensure that you always opt for full fat options such as real butter, cream (40% fat), sour cream, Greek/Turkish yogurt and high-fat cheese products. Regular milk, reduced fat and skim milk contain a lot of milk sugar and so they can be avoided along with sugary, flavoured and low-fat products.
Nuts: Trade your popcorn, candy or chips for nuts but consume them in moderation.
Berries: You could have fresh berries with whipped cream but, again, consume them in moderation.
